Joseph William Mann was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, and attested there for the Yorkshire Regiment. He served with the 6th Battalion during the Great War in the Gallipoli theatre of War from 14 July 1915. He was killed in action in Gallipoli on 21 August 1915; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. His brother, Charles Henry Mann, served with the West Riding Regiment, and subsequently with the Labour Corps, and survived the War.
