George Scougall Macbean was appointed an Ensign in the Bengal Army on 22 February 1844, He served in the Scinde as the only Commissariat officer in 1850. With the force against the Boree Affreedis in 1853 (Medal with Clasp). Accompanied Major Renaud in the advance force from Allahabad in June 1857 and served with Havelock’s Force from its first taking the field in July, and was present at the actions of Futtehpore, Aoung, Pandoo Nuddee, Cawnpore, Oonao, Buseerutgunge (both actions), Boorbeake-Chowkee, Bithoor, Mungarwar, Alumbaugh, relief of the garrison of Lucknow, and defence of the Residency; subsequent siege and capture of Lucknow, affairs of Rooyah and Allygunge, Rohilcund campaign and recapture of Bareilly (mentioned in despatches, thanked by Government, Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major and a years’ service). Served in the Afghan war in 1878-79 as Deputy Commissary General with the Khyber and Koorum Valley Forces (Medal). Companion of the Bath (Military) May 1881. Promoted to Lieutenant-General on 22 January 1889.

He had published Views in Lucknow from sketches made during the siege by Major Macbean, London, 1858.
