Infantry officer’s sword, 1822 pattern, for an officer of the 47th Regiment, the 87cm blade by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, No 10078 for 1859, etched with crowned VR cypher, foliate scrolls, crowned regimental nunber ‘47’ within a wreath, and within ribbons battle honours to ‘Sevastopol’, owners crest and motto ‘fideli coticula crux’ appear within an ornate cartouche which also contains his four medals appended, additionally his name appears on the back edge, a fine quality blade retaining almost all original finish, regulation brass ‘gothic hilt’ incorporating VR cypher, fish-skin covered grip bound with copper wire, retaining original worn sword knot, complete with its brass scabbard, guard a little distorted, scabbard with numerous dents £350-400

The sword of Charles Courtenay Villiers, commissioned as ensign 12th May 1823; served throughout the Crimea 1854-55, with the 47th, including the battles of Alma and Inkerman, capture of Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and sortie of 26th October; medal and three clasps, brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honour, 5th class of the Medjidie and Turkish medal.
