A very rare coin of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1567) sold today (Wednesday, September 16, 2020) at International Coin, Medals, Banknotes and Jewellery specialists Dix Noonan Webb for £24,800. Dating from 1555, it was estimated to fetch £8,000-10,000 and was bought by a member of the UK trade [lot 31].

The coin was part of
The Collection of Scottish Coins formed by Michael Gietzelt. Comprising 191 lots, the collection fetched £331,080 – far exceeding the pre-sale estimate.

Following the sale, Coin Specialist at Dix Noonan Webb, Jim Brown, commented: “This is one of the finest examples of a Mary, Queen of Scots gold coin to come to the market. Normally her pearl necklace would be rubbed and faded but this was in pristine condition. The coin was keenly contested by five bidders which was reflected in the price.”

The second highest price of the sale, that took place in the morning, was another fine gold coin that dated from 1540 and the reign of James V (1513-1542) – Queen Mary’s father. Estimated at £8,000-10,000, it sold for £14,880 to a member of the UK Trade [lot 24].

The afternoon saw a sale devoted to
British, Ancient and World Coins. Among the notable items was an extremely rare silver penny of Stephen and his wife Matilda – who fought with his cousin the Empress Matilda for the throne in the 12th Century. Discovered by metal detectorist Graeme Rushton in October 2018 on the border of South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, the coin is one of only 25 known specimens and sold to a US Collector for £10,540 [lot 225].

Graeme who is 50-years-old and lives in South Cumbria, has been detecting since he was 8-years-old, and ten years ago, he decided to start his own shop called
Unearthed, which sells metal detectors. After the sale, he said: “I'm naturally sad to see such a rare and desirable coin leave my collection but I hope the buyer enjoys it just as much as I did when unearthed it, the coin really does deserve to be in a special collection.”
