ROLEX PUTS IN A STRONG SHOWING AS LADIES’ WATCHES COME TO THE FORE
Ladies’ watches feature strongly in this auction, with fine examples already appearing in recent newsletters. Additional highlights include a c.2000 Patek Philippe lady’s white gold and diamond-set rectangular Gondolo bracelet watch.
This design takes its inspiration from Art Deco form watches, the name being a tribute to the historical relationship they had with the Rio de Janeiro based retailer Gondolo & Labouriau.
With a mother-of-pearl, pavé diamond-set centre dial and 18ct gold case with diamond-set sides and lugs, it also has a diamond-set brick-link bracelet. Signed to case, dial, movement and bracelet, it is expected to sell for £6,000-8,000.
A stunning lady’s gold dual-dialled ‘Reverso, Duetto’ rectangular wristwatch by Jaeger-LeCoultre is another stand-out lot. Dating to c.2005, it is manual winding and has silvered dials, the reverse silvered with mother-of-pearl centre. The 18ct gold Reverso case has ribbed band detail, and the reverse has diamond-set bands. The estimate is £2,000-3,000.
Rolex again makes it mark, with a fine selection on offer, among them a c.1977 stainless steel automatic Submariner wristwatch.
It belonged to a distinguished businessman whose career carried him across the globe. Before entering the world of business, he served as an officer in the Royal Artillery and later achieved the rank of Captain in the Royal Marine Reserves. Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, he was an avid sailor, competing in several prestigious ocean races, including the renowned Newport Bermuda Race.
The black dial has triangular, baton and dot indexes, and magnified date aperture, with centre seconds, and it comes with the Oyster bracelet, as well as punched guarantee and plastic wallet accessories. The guide is £6,000-8,000.
A stainless steel automatic dual time Rolex GMT-Master, ‘Pepsi’ wristwatch dating to c.1997 is another lot to note. With black dial and dot, triangular and baton indexes, as well as magnified date aperture and centre seconds, it has a stainless steel Oyster case, and calibrated ‘Pepsi’ bezel.
Rolex introduced the first GMT-Master in 1955. Originally designed as a dual-time tool watch for airline pilots, it enabled wearers to track multiple time zones simultaneously. Produced from 1988 to 1999, the reference 16700 marked the final chapter of the GMT-Master line before it was succeeded by the GMT-Master II collection. This example is accompanied by accessories that include a punched guarantee, booklet, spare link, tags and presentation case. The estimate is £5,000-7,000.
