EVIDENCE THAT DIAMONDS CONTINUE TO BE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND
Diamonds continue to prove their worth in Noonans’ Jewellery auctions as this latest outing demonstrated well.
Leading the sale was a diamond single stone ring, set with a brilliant-cut diamond, weighing 9.23 carats. Estimated at £22,000-26,000, it soared to £36,000.
As expected, highlights from the Collection of Lady Wardington also rose to the occasion. A mid 20th century gold and diamond-set evening purse in bi-colour ossierwork expected to fetch £15,000-20,000 attracted strong bidding, and sold for £28,000, whilst a second similar gold evening purse estimated at £10,000-15,000 achieved £22,000.
A diamond pendant, with an old brilliant-cut diamond weighing 7.46 carats beneath a trio of single-cut diamonds, exceeded expectations, taking a hammer price of £17,000 against hopes of £9,000-12,000.
One of the best performances came from a striking jewel from Lady Wardington’s Collection – a vari gem-set cluster brooch/pendant. The pear-shaped cluster was set with coloured gemstones including cushion-shaped yellow and blue Sri Lankan sapphires, and emeralds, aquamarines and rubies, with old brilliant-cut diamond highlights between. Against an estimate of £4,000-6,000, it took £15,000. The stylish 1950s diamond bracelet, the central articulated panel of geometric design with knot motif shoulders, and set throughout with brilliant and baguette-cut diamonds, also sold for £15,000.
An impressive pink gold and diamond-set Breitling Flying B, circa 2010, led the Watches section, the gilt dial with diamond and mother-of-pearl indexes, a jumping hours aperture, subsidiary seconds, and a pavé diamond-set outer plate, with 18ct gold case and bracelet. It had its original certificate, booklet and presentation case. Guided at £12,000-18,000, it sold for £20,000.
