A temporary mint was established at Chihuahua mint by a decree of 8th October 1810. The only coins made were 8 reales. Between 1810 and 1813, these were cast using Mexico City coins as patterns and obliterating/changing the mint mark and moneyer initials. Struck coins were issued between 1813 and 1822. Two countermarks were placed on the obverse, on the left a T designating receipt by the Royal Treasurer and on the right crowned pillars of Hercules with pomegranate beneath the comptrollers symbol of the Royal Hacienda.
