Place BidHarold I (1035-1040), Penny, Jewel Cross type, London, Godwine Stewer, +godwine step on lv, struck from dies of national B style, 1.09g/3h (Talvio L1; cf. SCBI Stockholm 430-1 [differing drapery style]; BEH 637 var. [moneyer’s signature]; N 802; S 1163). Almost extremely fine, a little weak on the king’s cheek; very rare with the double moneyer’s name £900-£1,200
Stew probably represents an abbreviation of the old English stiweard or ‘steward’, giving us Godwine’s position.
