From Paper Money of Scotland: The Ballindalloch Cotton Works were founded by Robert Dunmore in 1790. The works were bought by the famous old trading firm James Finlay & Co in 1798 and it was during their ownership in 1829 and 1830 that ‘checks’ for 5 and 7 Shillings were issued, payable within three months of issue. Their purpose seems to have been to keep money paid to their workers within the local economy, in and around the industrial village of Balfron between Stirling and Glasgow.
