Alfred James Farley was born in the Parish of Mildenhall, near Marleborough, Wiltshire, and attested for the Royal Marines at Salisbury on 17 January 1872, aged 17 years, and was embarked with the ‘African Battalion’, December 1873 to February 1874. He was discharged by purchase on 28 May 1882, being then ‘in possession of Ashanti War Medal & was under fire at Elmina.’
