Henry Fiennes Pelham Clinton, KG, PC, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (1720-94), who had the reputation of being ‘the most handsome man in England’, acceded to the title 1768; auditor of the Exchequer, 1751-94; Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire 1768-94; creator of Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire.

Racing at Nottingham, on the Forest ground, a mile north of the city centre and in actuality the most southern part of Sherwood Forest, was well-established early in the reign of George III. Race meetings continued to be staged there until the present-day course was opened at Colwick in 1892
