Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Serjt. Benjn. Reese, 43rd Lt.) small hole plugged in reverse at 12 o’clock and suspension re-fixed, edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise fine £180-£220

Benjamin Reese was born in the Parish of Lower Lanvrechoe, near Caerleon, Monmouthshire, and enlisted into the 43rd Foot at Newport on 13 October 1847, aged 17 years 4 months. He served in the Kaffir War of 1850-53, in the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1857-59, and in New Zealand from December 1863. The medal roll for the latter lists him as ‘Supplementary 2439 Cr. Sgt., Carnarvon Militia 21 March 1868’ and gives actions of Maratu, Te Ranga and 2 skirmishes. He was discharged in the rank of Colour-Sergeant at Camp Curragh on 7 June 1869, ‘on termination of his second period of limited engagement while serving as a supernumerary with the Royal Carnarvon Rifle Militia’.
