Frederick Chater Hills was born in Brighton and attested there for the Royal Sussex Regiment. He served with the 13th (3rd South Downs) Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 21 October 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in an attack on enemy positions at Martinsart Wood on the Somme. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
