George Banfield was born in Woodmansterne, Surrey in 1887, and attested for the South Wales Borderers in 1908. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 August 1914, and was recorded as missing presumed dead at Gheluvelt on 31 October 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Benjamin John Banfield was born in Burgh Heath, Surrey, in 1898, the younger brother of George Banfield, and attested for the Royal West Surrey Regiment at Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey, on 21 February 1916. He served in the 1st, 3rd and 6th Battalions during the Great War before being discharged as no longer fit for war service on 29 May 1918. He was awarded the Silver War Badge and died in Surrey in 1975.
