Alexander John Waterfield Slater was born on 17 June 1912 and was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He joined the Federated Malay States Police in 1934, and was taken Prisoner of War following the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942. Held at Changi from 6 March 1942 to 7 May 1944, and subsequently at Sime Road for the remainder of the War, on the cessation of hostilities he resumed his career with the Police, and was appointed Senior Assistant Commissioner, Federation of Malaya Police, in 1954. He was subsequently awarded the Second Class of the Malaysian Order of the Royal Household.
