Dover College, set in the grounds of St Martin Priory, opened in September 1871. The mayor in 1884 was Thomas Viney Brown. Sir William Henry Crundall (1847-1934), from a long-standing Dover shipbuilding family, served as mayor of Dover no less than 13 times between 1886 and 1910 and was chairman of the Dover Harbour Board
