Newton Catchpole was born in Letheringham, Suffolk. Having previously served for 10 years in the Volunteer Garrison Artillery in Bombay, he later emigrated to Australia. A Storekeeper by occupation, he attested into the 3rd Battalion Naval and Military Forces, Tropical Unit, on 15 January 1915, aged 39 years, 3 months. He embarked at Sydney on 25 January 1915 and sailed for Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. On 7 February 1915 Catchpole was posted to ‘G’ Company, 3rd Battalion, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force. On 6 March 1915 he was detailed for a course in gunnery at the Matupi Battery, Rabaul, but some time after this he became ill and as a consequence was returned to Australia on 18 July 1915. After one months recuperative leave he was discharged from the services on 24 September 1915. With copied service papers.
