Major John Crooks

John Joseph Crooks (1842-1928), from co Laois, was a member of the Army Service Corps during the Ashantee War, 1873-4, being promoted from Staff Sergeant to Assistant Commissary on 8 September 1873. He later became a Deputy Commissary with the rank of Major, and served as Colonial Secretary for Sierra Leone from 1890 to 1895. He authored several books on Africa, including A History of the Colony of Sierra Leone, Western Africa
(Dublin, 1903) and Records Relating to the Gold Coast Settlements from 1750 to 1874 (Dublin, 1923). He retired to Rathgar, Dublin, where he died in 1928.
