YORKSHIRE, York, New Stand, 1803, a uniface octagonal gilt-bronze pass, from the same die as previous, back named (Wm. Thornton Esqr., No. 19), 41mm, 15.58g (W 1570; D & W 324/29; cf. DNW T14, 600). Pierced as issued, about very fine and very rare; with black ribbon for suspension £240-300

Provenance: Bt T. Vignoles April 1994.

The accompanying ticket is in error in attempting to link the recipient to a ‘Mrs Thornton’, who rode side-saddle in a well-documented match in 1804 and about which much has been written; that lady’s ‘husband’ was a Col. Thomas Thornton
