THE PRESTON-MORLEY BUCKINGHAMSHIRE COLLECTION, Eton College, Duke of Newcastle Medal, 1833, in gold, by W. Wyon, bust of Henry Pelham right, rev. prima sequentem honestum est in secundis consistere within oak wreath, edge named (John Thomas Walford, 1852), 36mm, 30.79g (BHM 1646; MJP p.39; Grant, BNJ XXIII, p.130). An early issue without the usual light die flaw in field to left of bust; number 10 painted to right of date and other minor hairlines, otherwise extremely fine and brilliant, rare (£220-250)

John Thomas Walford (1834-94) at Eton Easter 1845-52; he entered as an Oppidan, boarding with Miss Edgar, becoming a King’s Scholar and later a Fellow of King’s after his undergraduate days. From 1861-5 he was an assistant master at Eton, a position he had to resign on becoming a Roman Catholic. He subsequently taught at Edgbaston under Cardinal Newman, then became a Jesuit and taught at Malta, Liverpool, Holywell College in Flint-shire and Beaumont College, Windsor; his teaching career ended as Professor of St Beuno’s College, St Asaph.
Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham Clinton (1785-1851), 4th Duke of Newcastle, instituted this medal in 1833; he was educated at Eton from 1796 to 1803
