1387002 Flight Sergeant William Percy Homersham flew 12 operational sorties before being killed in action during a raid on Berlin, 1 September 1943. It was during this raid that the Luftwaffe used ‘Fighter flares’ for the first time to light the bombers approach path. As a result 47 aircraft were lost and over two thirds of these fell to enemy fighters over or near the target.
