1336897 Sergeant Leonard William Nichols was posted to No. 78 Squadron in May 1943 and flew 16 operational sorties including the famous Peenemunde Raid on 17 August 1943. His Halifax bomber failed to return from a raid on Bochum in Germany on the night of 29 September 1943. he is commemorated by name on the Runnymede Memorial.
