D.C.M. London Gazette 1 February 1919: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership during operations east of Verchain on 26th October, 1918. When his platoon officer was wounded he assumed command. At one time when an enemy trench mortar was holding up the advance of the bridgehead platoon, he took two men and captured the trench mortar and team of six men.’ This award was for the attack and capture of the village of Artres, east of Verchain, near Cambrai, on the Hindenburg Line.
