‘When his battery position in a village was very heavily bombarded with gas and high explosive shells he went forward with another officer to reconnoitre and found that the enemy had penetrated the front line and were already in the village. He made his way back to his guns and, as they could not be kept in action any longer or removed, he disabled them when the enemy were upon him. He was three times captured by the enemy, but though unarmed he succeeded in escaping on each occasion and finally joined a party of infantry. He showed the greatest courage and initiative throughout.’
