William Harris was born in Tideswell, Derbyshire. A Sailor by occupation, he attested for short service in the Royal Lancaster Regiment at Barrow-in-Furness on 28 September 1884. Discharged by purchase from the 3rd Battalion in June 1887, he re-attested at Barrow-in-Furness on 28 September 1887. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, December 1889-February 1895. Harris was transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1895 and discharged on 27 September 1899. He attested once more, at Lancaster on 13 November 1899, aged 31 years. With the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, December 1899-August 1900, being wounded at Onderbrook Hill, Ladysmith on 22 February 1900. After service at home, he returned to South Africa, November 1900-April 1903. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s medal with three clasps (additionally entitled to the clasp for ‘Transvaal’) and the King’s medal with two clasps. After service in India, October 1904-January 1908 he returned home and was discharged at his own request on 7 February 1908.
