George Alley was born in Dorchester on 31 October 1871. Entering the Royal Navy as an Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in April 1894, he attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in February 1909. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in May 1909 when on Good Hope. During October 1911-October 1913 served on Philomel, seeing active service in the Persian Gulf. During the Great War he served on the torpedo gunboat Harrier, July 1914-March 1917. Demobilised on 1 February 1920. With copied service paper.
