George Atkinson Gridgeman was born in Hull, East Yorkshire on 24 September 1886. A Marine Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 24 May 1909, being confirmed in that rank in May 1910. He was promoted to E.R.A. 3nd Class in February 1913. Gridgeman served throughout the war on the battlecruiser Tiger, October 1914-April 1918, attaining the rank of Acting C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in May 1917. On the Tiger he saw service at the battles of Dogger Bank and Jutland. In May 1918 he was appointed Artificer Engineer and was advanced to Commissioned Engineer in May 1928 and Lieutenant (Engineer) in March 1933. He retired in 1937 but returned to the service in 1940, becoming a Lieutenant Commander (Engineer) in 1942.
