George Matthew Wallis was born in Southampton on 20 September 1873. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 25 February 1895, being confirmed at that rank in June 1897. He served on Daphne, January 1899-April 1902, being advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in February 1899 and seeing service in the China War 1900.
After attaining the rank of C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1903, he was promoted to Acting Artificer Engineer in May 1904 and Chief Artificer Engineer in April 1915.
