Charles Hubert Gill was born at Uppingham, Rutlandshire and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment direct from the 3rd (Militia) Battalion in March 1883, aged 19 years. In his subsequent career of 12 years with the Colours, he served out in India from November 1884 until November 1888, and in Burma from the latter month until April 1892, this last named posting witnessing his transferral to the 2nd Battalion, Oxfordshire Light Infantry, in September 1889. Advanced to Lance-Sergeant in April 1892, he was discharged in April 1896.
