James Edmund Clutterbuck was born at Newark Park, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire on 1 June 1823. Qualifying as a M.D. at Edinburgh in 1846, he was appointed an Assistant Surgeon with the 34th Foot in December 1848. After further service with the West India Regiment and on the Staff, he was promoted Staff Surgeon 2nd Class in October 1857. He served in the Indian Mutiny, 1857-58, with a flying column under Colonel Christie in the Futtehpore District and was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal. In December 1868 he was promoted to Surgeon-Major serving with the 42nd Highlanders. He served with them throughout the Ashantee war 1873-74, and was present at the battles of Amoaful and Ordahsu and the capture of Coomassie. Clutterbuck attained the rank of Surgeon-General in May 1882 and retired on 1 June 1883. He died in Plymouth on 16 December 1893.
