Approximately 140 Army Meritorious Service Medals were awarded to Royal Flying Corps personnel.
Alexander Leslie, who was born in Newhills, Aberdeen, enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps in November 1914, aged 21 years. Advanced to Air Mechanic 1st Class in March 1915, he served out in France in April-May of the same year, and in Egypt from November 1916 until May 1919, which latter period witnessed his advancement to Sergeant in April 1917 and the award of his Meritorious Service Medal ‘In recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field during the present war’ (London Gazette 17 December 1917 refers). He was discharged in November 1922.
