The exceptional Ashantee War C.B. group of ten to Deputy Surgeon-General Sir Robert William Jackson, Kt., Army Medical Department

The Most Honourable Order of The Bath, C.B. (Military) Companion’s breast badge, 22ct. gold and enamel, hallmarks for London 1857, complete with gold swivel ring and straight bar suspension and gold buckle on ribbon; The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Officer Brother’s breast badge, silver, with silver buckle on ribbon; Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Asst-Surgn., 90th Regt.), officially impressed naming; Indian Mutiny 1857-58, 3 clasps, Lucknow, Relief of Lucknow, Central India (Asst. Surgn., 84th Regt.), clasps fitted in order listed; Ashantee 1873-74, 1 clasp, Coomassie (Surgn. Major, C.B., 1873-4), these three on a triple silver buckle bar; South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Surgn. Maj., C.B., A.M.D.); Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, Tel-El-Kebir (Bde. Surgn., C.B.); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue, unnamed, fitted with an ‘Indian Mutiny’ style suspension; Khedive’s Star 1882, unnamed; Turkey, Order of Medjidie, 3rd Class badge, silver, gold and enamel, these last five with silver buckles on ribbon; together with Trinity College Dublin Prize Medallions (2), obv. bust of Queen Elizabeth I facing left, rev, shield bearing coat-of-arms and inscribed, ‘Johannes S. Jackson, 1884’, gold, 40mm., 31.03g.; another, similar, rev. inscribed, ‘Robertus W. Jackson, 1886’, silver, 52mm., 66.25g, very fine and better (12) £5000-6000

Robert William Jackson was born at Edenderry, King’s Co. on 11 August 1827. On 26 May 1854 he was appointed an Assistant Surgeon with the 90th Foot. Serving with them in the Crimean War he was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol. Transferring to the 84th Foot in 1858, he served in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny, being present at the battle of Cawnpore, Alum Bagh, the assault and capture of Lucknow and the operations at Calpee, Oude. Placed on Half Pay during 1861-63, he returned to active service as Assistant Surgeon to the 86th Foot on 31 March 1863. He was promoted to Staff Surgeon on 7 August 1866 and Surgeon-Major on 7 August 1866. On active service in the Ashantee War of 1873-74, he was present at Essamam, the relief of Abrakrampa, the battles of Amoaful and Ordashu and the capture of Coomassie. For his services during the war he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the C.B. In South Africa during 1879, he was in action against the Sekukuni and was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 16 January 1880). Promoted to Brigade Surgeon on 5 May 1881, he next saw service in Egypt, being present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir and was again mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 2 November 1882) and awarded the Order of Medjidie 3rd Class. He retired with the honorary rank of Deputy Surgeon-General in 1882 and was Knighted the same year. Sir Robert Jackson died on 12 May 1921. For the recipient’s miniature medals, see lot 1210.
