An Order of St. John pair to Brigade Surgeon E. D. Tomlinson, Army Medical Department

The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Officer Brother’s breast badge, silver; New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated 1860 to 1866 (Assist. Surgn., 4th Battn. Mility. Tr.) very fine and better (2) £450-550

Edward Denham Tomlinson was born at Wakefield, West Yorkshire on 13 November 1836. He received his medical training at St. George’s Hospital and qualified as a M.R.C.S. in 1858. Entering the Army as an Assistant Surgeon in January 1860, he served in the New Zealand War, and was present at the capture of the redoubt of Katikara, and of the Pahs at Manutahi, Mataitawa, To Anoi and Waikokou, the action of Poutolo, the attack on Sentry Hill, the ambuscades at Tapuao and Wairau and the destruction of the Pahs and villages in the neighborourhood of Warea. He attained the rank of Surgeon-Major in April 1875 and retired on Half Pay with the honorary rank of Brigade Surgeon on 7 July 1880. In 1884 he gained the degree of M.D. from St. Andrew’s University. On the examining staff of the St. John’s Ambulance Association, No. 2 District and Port of London, during 1887-1900. He was appointed an Honorary Associate of the Order on 30 July 1889. Surgeon Tomlinson died in Earls Avenue, Folkestone on 17 February 1905 and was interred at Holy Trinity Church, Folkestone.
