The mounted group of five miniature dress medals to Lieutenant D. Campbell, Seaforth Highlanders, Military Cross, G.V.R.; 1914 Star, with clasp; British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. oak leaf; Delhi Durbar 1911, mounted as worn, contained in leather case; together with a Seaforth Highlanders Association Medal, 1 clasp, 1940, rev. inscribed, ‘D. David Campbell was born at Bishopmill, Morayshire, on 12 May 1888. In 1903, at the age of 15 he joined the 3rd Volunteer Battalion Seaforth Highlanders at Elgin as a drummer boy. In 1906 he enlisted into the 2nd Battalion and in 1909 was posted to the 1st Battalion stationed at Peshawar. At the outbreak of the Great War he left India as a Corporal with the Seaforths as part of the 7th (Meerut) Division and entered France in October 1914. He took part in the fighting at Festubert, Neuve Chapell and Loos. In 1916 when the Battalion was sent to Mesopotamia he had risen to the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant. Here he was mentioned in despatches, awarded the Military Cross, and promoted firstly to Company Sergeant Major and then Lieutenant. Sold with service history and newspaper cutting concerning the recipient, Buckingham Palace address, dated 27 June 1937, named to Campbell and three photographs.
