Beggars Benison Club, an oval silver-gilt badge, unsigned, Adam and Eve walking towards a bower, rev. Adonis, with spear and dog, stands behind a recumbent Venus attended by Cupid, 40 x 29mm (D & W 107/58; MI II, 526/87; E 545; Brodie 239). Some rubbing to the high points, otherwise about very fine and the gilding intact, rare; with integral suspension loop (£150-200)

The Beggars Benison Club was founded at Anstruther, Fife, in 1739, as ‘a place of frivolity for men of all classes.’ These badges are thought to date from the early years of the 19th century
