Donald J. MacLeod was born in India on 11 July 1827, and baptized at Belgaum, son of Lieutenant-General Donald MacLeod, 4th Madras Light Cavalry. Educated in England he was nominated for a cadetship in the H.E.I.C. in the season of 1844, and admitted to the Bengal Establishment as an Ensign on 5 January 1845. He was posted to the 12th Native Infantry at Ferozepore and served with that regiment during the Sutlej campaign, at the battles of Ferozeshuhur and Sobraon. He transferred as Acting Adjutant to the 12th Irregular Cavalry and served with the army of the Punjab at the skirmish near Ramnuggur and passage of the Chenab. He subsequently served with the 8th Irregular Cavalry and was promoted to Lieutenant in October 1849. In March 1850, he was appointed to do duty with the Arracan Battalion, where he was to serve the remainder of his brief career. He participated in the Burmese war of 1852-53, and during the next few years was second-in-command and then commander of the battalion. In late 1857, he was placed at the disposal of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal and appointed Junior Assistant to the Commissioner of Arracan. In May 1858, he was placed at the disposal of the Commander-in-Chief, but died shortly afterwards at Akyab on 5 August 1858, aged 29.
