Robert Bailey was born near Diss, Norfolk and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in January 1861, aged 19 years. In his subsequent career of 20 years with the Colours, he served out in India between July 1861 and December 1881, and was present in the Jowaki operations of 1877-78, in addition to the capture of Ali Musjid in the Second Afghan War (service record refers). He was discharged in April 1882.
