Knight Bachelor’s Badge, 1st type breast badge, silver-gilt and enamel, hallmarks for London 1926, in its fitted case of issue, extremely fine £200-300

Sold with original 10 Downing Street letter from Lloyd George’s private secretary to ‘Professor Israel Gollancz’, dated ‘April 1919’, in which the latter is informed of His Majesty’s desire to confer upon him the honour of Knighthood, together with Home Office letter, dated ‘13 May 1919’, requesting the Professor’s attendance at Buckingham Palace to receive his knighthood one week later.

Who Was Who 1929-40 for full details of Sir Israel’s distinguished and scholarly career. Among other prominent appointments, he was a Fellow and Secretary of the British Academy and Professor of English Language and Literature in the University of London. He died in June 1930.
