The Boer War casualty pair to Lieutenant J. Collinson Harrison, 2nd Dragoons, who died of wounds received in action near Belfast in August 1900

Jubilee 1897, silver, unnamed; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 6 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast (Lieut. J. Collinson Harrison, 2nd Drgns.) the medals contained in a purpose-made silver box, hallmarked London 1907, with glass panel, the glass cracked, affixed with silver regimental badge and inscribed with regimental crest, battle honours etc., and ‘Lt. J. C. Harrison, Royal Scots Greys. Born August 9th 1889 Died September 3rd 1900 of wounds received in action near Belfast, August 25th 1900 Buried at Pretoria Transvaal South Africa’, and further inscribed on the inside of the gilded lid ‘This box is made from the silver lace off his uniform and the eagle is off his tunic’, the first with some edge bruising, otherwise nearly extremely fine (2) £2500-3000

John Collinson Harrison was born in August 1869, and educated at Eton. He entered the 2nd Dragoons in June 1889, being promoted to Lieutenant in May 1891. He embarked with his regiment for South Africa in October 1899, and first served in the north of Cape Colony, and afterwards was present at the relief of Kimberley. He then took part in the advance on Bloemfontein and Pretoria. He was severely wounded in action near Belfast on 25 August 1900, and died from his wounds nine days later.
