Charles Frederick William Moir, who was born in September 1842, was appointed an Ensign in the 3rd West India Regiment in December 1861 and was advanced to Lieutenant in October 1864. Placed on half-pay in June 1870, he gained an appointment in the 57th Regiment in July 1873 and transferred to the 17th Regiment as a Captain in December 1877.

He was subsequently actively employed during the Second Afghan War, being present at the capture of Ali Musjid and in the second expedition into the Bazar Valley. He was latterly Brigade Transport Officer and General Transport Officer in the Kuram Valley 1879-80, services that resulted in him being mentioned in despatches and given the Brevet of Major.

Having been confirmed in the rank of Major in March 1881, Moir served as Adjutant to the Auxiliary Forces 1882-87, and was advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel back in the 17th Regiment in September 1890. But at the end of 1894 he was placed on half-pay and ended his career as a Colonel and C.O. of the West India Regimental Depot in Jamaica.
