17th Century, Cornwall, Millbrook, Gregory Dowlinge, Farthing, 1666, 0.63g/12h (Thompson and Gaunt, BNJ 1992, pl.23, 1, same dies; BW. Bedfordshire 75). Traces of surface verdigris on reverse, about fine, very rare and of American interest (£120-150)

Gregory Dowling, merchant mariner, first wife’s name Ann (†October 1670), second wife’s name Margaret (†
c. 1693). Dowling’s will, dated 26 November 1674 and published by R.H. Thompson and D.J. Gaunt (BNJ 1992, pp.154-8) makes it clear that Dowling was then commanding the ship Amitie, out of Plymouth, bound for Virginia, USA
