James A. Coombes (also spelt Coombs) was born in 1874 and attested for the Rifle Brigade in London on 20 April 1892. He served with the 2nd Battalion in the Nile Expedition, and was present at the Battle of Omdurman on 2 September 1898; he also took part in he Occupation of Crete that same year.
