John Bourne was born at Alverstoke, Hampshire, on 22 May 1851, and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 1 May 1866. He volunteered for continuous service of 10 years on 22 May 1869, and extended this for another 10 years in May 1879, at which time he was a Petty Officer 1st Class with the ratingof Captain of the Main-top. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in this same rate in September 1879, while serving aboard H.M.S. Spartan. He served aboard Condor from December 1883 until September 1887, including operations at Suakin in 1884-85 and the action at Tofrek. Chief Petty Officer John Bourne was finally discharged to Shore and Pension from H.M.S. President on 26 May 1889. Sold with copy service papers and relevant medal roll entries.
