Alexander Dingwall Fordyce, who was born in March 1860, was first commissioned into the 16th Foot, in January 1879. Transferring to the Bombay Staff Corps in August of the following year, he served variously as a Wing Officer in the 2nd and 12th Native Infantry until gaining attachment to the Commissariat Department in December 1882; and he was serving as a Sub-Assistant Commissary General at Deesa when called to duty in Upper Burma 1886-7.

Fordyce went on to hold a variety of regimental appointments as an officiating Wing Officer or Wing Commander, mainly with the 3rd Bombay Regiment, and was a Cantonment Magistrate at Neemuch between 1891-96. He was placed on the Retired List as a Major in January 1899.
