Frederick John Gill was born in Staveley, Derbyshire on 20 October 1894. On 15 January 1915 he enlisted at York into the Royal Marines Medical Unit, aged 20 years. He served with the 1st Field Ambulance R.N.D. in Gallipoli but was invalided to England from Alexandria in December 1915. He was discharged on 27 November 1917 to receive a Temporary Commission in the R.N.V.R. for service in the R.N.D. Serving in France, he received a gunshot wound to the right thigh on 29 September 1918 whilst serving with the Hood Battalion at the Canal du Nord. Sold with a quantity of copied research papers.
