Robert Little lived at Malta Road, Bootle, and was educated at Salisbury Road School. Prior to the war he was employed by the Cunard Steamship Company. After being mobilised with the Liverpool Scottish in August 1914, he accompanied the original contingent to France in the following November aboard the S.S. Maidan.
