William Sewell was born at Sunnyside, Hertfordshire, and attested for the 3rd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment on 10 December 1915. He proceeded to France in September 1916 and was posted to the 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. He was severely wounded in the left buttock on 5 April 1918, and for much of late June to early September 1918 in hospital suffering with pyrexia. He was discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 6 October 1919.
