A good Second War ‘8th Army’ M.M. group of five to Gunner G. Williams, Royal Artillery

M.M. London Gazette 4 February 1943. Recommendation states ‘On November 5th 1942 Gnr. Williams was driving a Gun Tower of 14/66 Fd. Bty. R.A. when in action against the rearguard of the 21st Panzer Division. One troop canme under fire from point blank range of a perfectly concealed 88mm., two gun crews were knocked out at once and an ammunition lorry towing one of the guns set on fire.
The troop was moved to a flank and Gnr. Williams and Lieut. Lawrey went back for the gun under heavy fire from the 88mm. gun to hook it up and rejoin the troop. Gnr. Williams displayed great coolness and courage whilst accomplishing this.’
Lieutenant Lawrey was awarded the Military Cross for the same action.
