Keswick School of Industrial Art: a steel caddy spoon, with spot hammered finish, the stem edged with stitch detail, reverse stamped ‘KSIA KESWICK’ and ‘FIRTH TAYBRIGHT’, length 9.2cm. £30-£50

Keswick School of Industrial Art (KSIA) was founded in 1884 by Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley and his wife Edith as an evening class in woodwork and metalwork at the Crosthwaite Parish Rooms, in Keswick, Cumbria. (Canon Hardwicke was one of the three co-founders of the National Trust and a prominent philanthropic figure in the Cumbria). The enterprise, designed to help alleviate unemployment, prospered and within 10 years more than 100 men were attending classes. The school closed in 1984.
