Henry Albert Holding was born at Worcester in August 1899 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in May 1916 as a Boy First Class. He saw operational service during the Great War aboard the battlecruiser H.M.S. Inflexible and was later awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1932 while part of the crew of the heavy cruiser H.M.S. Suffolk.

During the Second World War Holding served aboard the light cruiser H.M.S.
Colombo and was released from the Navy in October 1945.
